How is CIS managed?

CIS management is highly skilled, well educated, and very experienced in the competitive intelligence field.  We take a conservative approach to competitive research -- and reject any potential client that would have us do otherwise.

CIS management insures that our company stands apart from other competitive intelligence practitioners in these ways:

  • Selectivity in the projects we accept.

  • Informing clients of realistic research expectations.

  • Planning all steps in the research process (requiring client approval of a research plan document).

  • Careful implementation of approved plans, which feature tough ethical guidelines and procedures.

  • Thoughtful analysis of findings and well-reasoned reports to clients.

CIS management works on a confidential basis with only ONE CLIENT PER BUSINESS CATEGORY, avoiding conflicts of interest and building close relationships of trust with our clients.

We practice full disclosure and adhere to the ethical guidelines set forth by the Society of Competitive Intelligence Professionals (SCIP).   In fact, our company's ethical guidelines are tougher than those of SCIP.

Another major strength and advantage for our clients is that we provide smart analysis and comprehensive reporting, based on many years of business experience in a variety of fields.

What kinds of research methods does CIS use?

CIS specializes in primary research.  This means that we have expertise in conducting in-depth interviews with executives and others who may be helpful in our research assignments.  All such interviewing features full-disclosure and cautions to respondents against revealing confidential and/or trade secret information.

CIS also conducts comprehensive secondary research for most projects, usually in advance of primary research.  Note that our secondary research efforts often uncover materials that our clients have failed to find in their own research efforts.  Secondary research involves use of publicly available materials, such as databases, library and archival materials, Freedom of Information Act documents, etc.

What are first steps in working with CIS on a research project?

First, contact our top management for discussion of your research objectives, budget, reasonable expectations, etc.  (See Contact)  We will then prepare a lengthy, detailed proposal for your review.  This detailed document will include thoughtful discussion on objectives,  methodology for your proposed project, budgetary alternatives, etc.

Once you approve the project and assign it to us, CIS goes to work developing a "Strategic & Tactical Research Plan" for the project, including specific research objectives and questions, etc.  You must review, modify (if necessary), and sign off on the Plan before CIS begins the data collection phase of the project.

How much does it cost?

CIS works within client budgets, no matter what size.  To that end, our proposals typically offer several budgetary alternatives, based on previous similar projects.

Our general guideline is that accuracy and usefulness of research findings is directly related to size of budget.  A larger budget usually (but not always) means we are able to conduct a more comprehensive research effort, acquiring and confirming data from more sources.
